Sunday marked the beginning of a new design in Facebook profiles along with a new new messaging system, an online check-in application and a deals service.
The Facebook team says that the new redesign of user profiles will help to better define and display each of the 500 million users. And that number continutes to grow daily. Amazing huh? Byron Acohido puts it best by saying 7% of the world's humans are on Facebook.
Anyways, after pondering that huge number in my head for a bit, back to the profile redesign. Although you may think the new design is catered to you, the everyday user. It is not. It seems that the new design will trigger you to share more about yourself. And that in turn means that more advertisers could then target you more specifically. EMarketer claims that Facebook stands to rake in $1.28 billion in advertising this year. That number is already up $665 million from 2009. And they estimate already that for 2011, advertising sales will reach $1.76 billion.
Will the new redesign of user profiles on Facebook help push that 2011 estimate of profits over $2 billion? Time will tell.
