1932 Newspaper Clipping | Maysville, KY

1932 Newspaper Clipping

Last night I was dusting the bookshelf that holds some of my husbands old books that he collects. He searches for these mainly at estate sales. Anyways, I was looking at them, picked one up and an old newspaper clipping fell out.

It was an edition of the Cincinnati Times-Star from May 31, 1932. The sincle copy price was

stamped only 2 cents or if by carrier per week the price was 12 cents... wow. Well, the subscriber was a Kentucky resident, somewhat close to my location.

Anyways, I believe why someone clipped and saved the front page, upper section was because of the "Slate's Largest Family Hold's Reunion," and it had a large family photo also. But that is not the article that I found intriguing.

It was an article as typed below:

----

"Dog Watches at Child's Grave in Maysville" (KY)

Sexton unable to drive animal from post

Maysville, KY., May 31-(Special)- Several weeks ago Sexton Wiggins of the Maysville Cemetery noticed a small black terrier dog at the grave of a child that had been buried about two years ago. He did not bother the dog at that time, but when he was in the part of the cemetery today he saw the same dog lying alongside the grave. He approached the animal, which showed fight.

The Sexton then became interested in the dog, made friends with it and took it food and water, but nothing he could do would move it from the grave. It is believed that the dog believes the grave of the child is the grave of his master.

Wiggins has tried to get rid of the animal by forcing it away from the grave where it seems to think it's master lies, but so far he has been unsuccessful, as the moment he leaves the part of the cemetery the dog goes back and starts its' vigil.

----

I thought that was a cool little article and just wanted to share it. Who knows, maybe someday, a family member of the man mentioned will do a google search for family archives and run across this post? That would be a cool find!

Interesting dog tale! I believe it plausible that many dogs would do this for their lost human companions.
